Mellow Mud Pottery was born in 1974, on
a small back porch with a homemade kick wheel, some handmade
tools, clay and a gas kiln. Brent had studied at Cal State
Fullerton and Susan had studied pottery at a private pottery
studio in Northern California. The rest we learned through
inspiration.
We had built a steady traditional pottery
business, but were looking for new direction; dishware was
just too dull. Living in a rural area surrounded by ponds,
we started the “Garden Theme.” We designed pieces
for back yards and patios. We carved our niche into the
clay world, exclusively from our own designs.
Our pieces are handmade using a blend
of rich, red California stoneware clays and a wide range
of texture application. Our latest works are three-dimensional
images of Sunmen, Sunladies, geckos, quail, rabbits, fish,
frogs, turtles and southwest petroglyghs. These pieces are
hand built and high fired.
Mellow Mud is striving to produce unique
one of a kind pieces of art. Our home and studio is located
in the Northern Sierras above Chico, California. All our
work begins with a twenty-five pound block of clay and ends
after hours of creative imagination and spirit.
Sincerely,
Brent & Susan Tate |
